Lights, Camera, Action! St. Joseph’s Convent School, Khandwa, Hosts a First-of-Its-Kind Filmmaking Workshop

St. Joseph’s Convent Higher Secondary School, Khandwa, took an exciting step towards experiential and creative learning by organising a six-day Filmmaking Workshop from 12 to 17 October 2026 for students of Classes IX to XII. Presented as a first-of-its-kind initiative in Khandwa’s educational landscape, the workshop introduced students to the fascinating world of cinema, storytelling and visual communication.

Mentored by Mr. Sudeep Sohni and his team from Sudeep Sohni Films, Bhopal, the workshop offered students an opportunity to learn directly from film professionals and gain insights into filmmaking, supported by professional training experience associated with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

Discovering the World of Cinema

The workshop was designed to help students look beyond films as a source of entertainment and understand cinema as a powerful medium of storytelling, artistic expression and communication.

Through interactive sessions and practical learning experiences, students explored a wide range of topics, including:

  • Ideation and Scriptwriting: Transforming creative ideas into compelling stories and scripts.
  • Filmmaking Techniques: Understanding the processes involved in planning and producing a film.
  • Film Appreciation: Exploring the artistic and technical elements that make cinema impactful.
  • How to Watch Cinema: Learning to observe films critically and appreciate storytelling, cinematography and visual language.
  • Fundamentals of Film Acting: Understanding character development, expressions and the basics of approaching a role.
  • Cinema Beyond Entertainment: Discovering the connections between filmmaking and advertising, journalism, radio and other forms of media.

The sessions encouraged students to ask questions, exchange ideas, experiment with creative approaches and appreciate the many skills required to bring a story to the screen.

Eight Groups, Eight Creative Journeys

One of the most exciting aspects of the workshop was the opportunity for students to put their learning into practice. The participants were divided into eight groups, with each group taking responsibility for developing and producing its own film.

Students explored different filmmaking roles, including director, writer, editor and other essential production responsibilities. Working together, they developed concepts, shaped scripts, coordinated scenes and transformed their ideas into finished films.

This hands-on experience allowed them to understand that filmmaking is a collaborative process in which creativity, planning, technical skills and teamwork come together. Each group brought its own imagination and perspective to the project, resulting in a memorable journey of learning and discovery.

A Grand Closing Ceremony: Young Filmmakers Take the Screen

The six-day workshop culminated in a special closing ceremony on 17 October 2026 at 11:30 a.m., following the school's Parent-Teacher Meeting.

The school hall was almost filled with enthusiastic parents who gathered to witness the achievements of their children. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation as the eight groups presented their films on the big screen.

For the parents, it was a proud moment to witness their children stepping into the roles of storytellers, directors, writers and editors. Each screening offered a glimpse into the students' creativity, collaborative spirit and ability to translate ideas into visual narratives.

The presentation was more than a showcase of completed films; it was a celebration of the confidence, dedication and teamwork the students had developed throughout the workshop. The enthusiastic presence of parents made the occasion especially memorable.

Celebrating Creativity and Achievement

The closing ceremony also featured the distribution of certificates to the participating students, recognising their involvement and successful completion of the workshop.

The certificates marked the culmination of six days of exploration, experimentation and creative growth. More importantly, the students returned with practical insights into filmmaking, a greater appreciation of cinema and the confidence to explore new creative possibilities.

The initiative highlighted the importance of providing students with opportunities to discover interests beyond academics and develop skills relevant to an increasingly digital and media-driven world.

Education Beyond the Classroom

At St. Joseph’s Convent Higher Secondary School, Khandwa, learning extends beyond textbooks and conventional classroom experiences. The Filmmaking Workshop reflected the school's commitment to encouraging innovation, critical thinking, collaboration and creative expression.

By introducing students to the world of professional filmmaking, the school created a platform where imagination met practical experience and where young minds could explore the power of visual storytelling.

The workshop also encouraged students to become more thoughtful viewers and responsible creators of media, helping them understand how stories can inform, inspire, entertain and influence society.

The Beginning of Many More Stories

From the first ideas and scriptwriting sessions to the final screening before an enthusiastic audience of parents, the workshop was a memorable journey of discovery.

The experience demonstrated that when students are given the right guidance and opportunities, they can transform their imagination into meaningful creative work.

The cameras may have stopped rolling, but the stories of our young filmmakers are only just beginning!

St. Joseph’s Convent Higher Secondary School, Khandwa, proudly celebrates its budding storytellers and looks forward to inspiring many more young minds to dream, create and communicate through the magic of cinema.

Lights. Camera. Action. The future of storytelling begins with our students!
